The Five Commanders of Islam are outstanding companions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who were leaders, army generals, and fierce warriors, and they were a big part of the Islamic conquest. They were true defenders of Islam who showed how important loyalty, intelligence, courage, strength, and ultimately belief in Allah SWT was in everything they did, and they were exemplary Muslims.

Hamzah bin ‘Abdul Muṭṭalib was known as The Lion of Allah for his strength and bravery. He was Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s guard and his main protector. Being the first commander of the Muslim army, Hamzah fought in the great battles of Badr and Uhud. Hamzah was the leader of the martyrs and when he died, Islam lived.

Abu ‘Ubaydah Al-Jarrah was one of the ten companions who was promised paradise. Abu ‘Ubaydah saw his life as being of service to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and fought alongside him in every battle. He led with great humility and did not seek for any recognition of his leadership from the ‘ummah. He was valued highly in the eyes of the Prophet ﷺ for his love for the dīn and his trustworthiness, Al-Amīn.

Sa’ad bin Abu Waqqas was a master in archery and was called The First Archer in Islam. He witnessed all the battles with Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his strength and skills made him the Prophet ﷺ’s biggest protector. Sa’ad bin Abu Waqqas endured a painful threat from his mother to deter him from being a Muslim. He was given the gift of mustajab du’ā and Allah SWT always answered his prayers.

He went through three significant phases in his life, and in the last phase he was tested with power, money, and politics. ‘Amr bin Al-‘As’s life ended with genuine repentance by the mercy of Allah SWT, as he believed he acted in the best interest of the ‘ummah.

Khālid Al-Walīd’s heroic performance in the battles he participated gained him huge praise from the ummah. There was not one body part of Khālid Al-Walīd that did not receive a blow from a sword or was pierced by an arrow. He always put Allah SWT’s interest above everything else and fought each great battle for His sake. Khālid Al-Walīd was given the title ‘sayfullah’, Sword of Allah.
